From Overwhelm to Overcome: Strategies for Stress Relief

The significance of monitoring your stress levels extends far beyond Stress Awareness Month this April! While this is a great time to raise awareness, it’s equally important to look within and understand its effects on physical and mental well-being. Stress is an inevitable part of life and the best approach for handling it varies for everyone, especially Release Founder Linda Townsend.

For her, succumbing to high levels of stress impacts everything from her sleep patterns to gut health, immunity, and mood–everything is out of whack. To help manage, she’s assembled a wellness toolbox centered around prevention: “If I regularly exercise, get outside, meditate, and eat the right food, I find that I am much calmer and less apt to get overly stressed.”

“It’s so important to be aware of your stress levels; I have an app on my watch called Stress Monitor, and it literally zings my wrist when my stress levels climb. When this happens, I pick a way to reduce my stress level, whether it’s a few deep breaths, taking a much-needed break, or pouring myself into a task to distract myself.”

Whether literally or figuratively, Townsend always finds time to unplug when the moment is right. We can achieve a happier and more fulfilling life by incorporating healthy habits that encourage relaxation and diminish anxiety. To help you get started, we share a few best practices from our wellness providers at Release Well-Being Center

01.) Exercise: A Powerful Antidote

When life’s demands seem overwhelming, breaking a sweat can work wonders for your well-being. Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, which act as natural mood lifters. It reduces the production of stress hormones like cortisol, helping to alleviate tension and anxiety. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga session, or workout class, the focus required during exercise can help quiet a busy mind and promote a sense of calm.

Kristin Esper, Guest Services Lead at Release, finds solace in hot yoga and nature walks when she’s feeling overwhelmed. “When I need to unwind after a stressful week, I make sure to get outside as the weather gets nicer to go on long walks with my dog,” she said. “Hot yoga also helps to release any negative energy from a tough week.”

02.) Embrace A Day of Self-Care

You’ve heard it before–self-care is the best care. When you’re not feeling your best, look for moments that bring you peace.

Take care of your body by treating yourself to a soothing massage, facial, or spa day pass for a moment of bliss. This will melt away tension and promote a profound sense of relaxation, stimulating the production of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine. Not only will this reduce stress and anxiety levels, it will leave you feeling more relaxed and rejuvenated giving you the mental clarity and focus you need.

Release Massage Therapist Heather Magnoli highly recommends massage therapy as a way to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, lower cortisol, and repair the body. “Chronic stress is one of the reasons we can age biologically faster than our chronological age,” she said. Slowing down, being in the NOW moment, and allowing yourself to feel grounded and safe are states of being we strive to create. These states of being allow for deep healing.” Whether you prefer a deep tissue to relieve knots or a gentle Swedish massage, our skilled therapists will tailor each session to your unique needs and target areas of stress and discomfort.

03.) Cultivate Tranquility

It’s time to combat stress and cultivate inner calm through meditation and mindfulness. Stress, a common cause of shallow breathing and fast heart rate, can be counteracted by practicing slow, deep breathing techniques. By focusing on your breath and engaging in slow movement, the body’s relaxation response gets activated, calming the nervous system and promoting tranquility. Meditation is a great regular activity to add to your daily routine. With time, you’ll find this to be the best asset in your toolbox–to quiet your mind and reflect inward. Additional holistic benefits include lowering blood pressure, alleviating muscle tension, and boosting the immune system.
