How to Detox Your Body Naturally
Toxins bombard us from every angle. They exist in the air we breathe, the cosmetics and cleaning products we use, the water we drink and bathe in, and the foods (especially processed ones) we eat. Even mental stress ups our toxic load. The good news is that our bodies have natural processes and cycles for detoxifying and cleansing. Between meals, while sleeping, and when exposed to only whole foods for a period of time, are all times when we naturally “clean house”. Our bodies use these windows to excrete toxins through the liver, skin, kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system, and colon.
However, sometimes we get out of balance and the body is unable to thoroughly cleanse itself. If not processed by the body immediately, toxins get stored in our tissues. Stored toxins lead to inflammation which starts a whole cascade of issues. First we just don’t feel “well” and over time we increase our risk of developing one of many chronic diseases.
The holidays are an example of how a little too much indulgence, and/or a little less time for self-care, can be enough to push us out of balance. It’s ok to let go of our routines sometimes, but when we do so we need to be mindful and reboot. Taking time to cleanse the body and nurture our vital organs goes a long way in disease prevention, and it is not as difficult as you might think! We our resilient, and the body has a wonderful way of rebalancing and self-correcting if given the right tools!
Top 3 ways to boost the detoxification process
1: Sweating: Skin is the largest organ in the body. When we work out, practice hot yoga class or sit in a sauna, we remove toxins from stored tissues. Just as we absorb toxins through the skin, we can also pass them back through to excrete them!
2: Bowel Movements: Yes, we need to talk poop to talk toxins. When the body does all the hard work of preparing the toxins for excretion though the liver and the kidneys, the last thing we want is to re-absorb the toxins due to lack of “movement”. When the stool is not moved out of the body, toxins can move back in. Hydration and fiber intake are ways we can assist our bodies to make sure we have ideal bowel movements to take the trash out. If less than one to two movements per day, further investigation into root cause of constipation may be needed.
3: Detoxification: By eating only whole nutrient dense food, it doesn’t take long to up regulate the body’s ability to push out the toxins. With the right food intake you can significantly change how you feel, and you can do it in days to weeks! The key to feeling vibrant lies in the ability to reverse the factors that trigger inflammation, and therefore leave you open to chronic dis-ease. Simply put, if you calm the inflammation, you can activate your body’s natural healing response, and change the trajectory of your health.
