Inside Release: A Wellness Tour for Your Mental Health

Insights from Founder Linda Townsend
Here’s something I’ve learned in nearly a decade of running Release, and two decades of coaching people through life transitions: most of us don’t invest in our wellness because it sounds lovely. We invest when we realize what it’s costing us not to.
Some of those contributing factors are: the bad sleep that’s eroding our patience with our kids; the tight shoulders that have become a headache that’s become a week of lost focus; the low-grade anxiety we’ve been calling “just how I am” for so long. We’ve forgotten it’s optional.
When I opened Release in January 2017, I wanted to build a place where wellness wasn’t a reward for the people who already have their lives together. I wanted it to be a safety net for the rest of us, who are quietly paying a price we haven’t fully named. Our philosophy has a name: The Five Petals. Through movement, mindfulness, recovery, nourishment, and discovery, we can nurture every part of ourselves and live well. For Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to walk you through each one and the specific cost of neglecting it.
Movement: What You Lose When You Stop Moving
A sedentary body is a depressed body. Inactivity is one of the strongest predictors of declining mental health, cognitive decline, and chronic disease. It’s not that movement is nice. It’s that the absence of it is actively eroding something. Our fitness classes and yoga offerings aren’t about punishment or aesthetics. They’re about interrupting the slow drift that happens when we sit too long, scroll too much, and stop inhabiting our own bodies.
Mindfulness: What Unchecked Stress Is Doing To You Right Now
Chronic stress that never gets processed doesn’t just make you feel bad. It rewires you. It shortens your fuse, narrows your perspective, and damages your sleep. Over the years, it measurably shrinks parts of the brain responsible for memory and emotional regulation.
Our sound baths, Reiki sessions, breathwork, and salt room aren’t indulgences. They’re interruptions to a pattern that, left alone, quietly takes more from you every year. Mindfulness isn’t about emptying your mind. It’s about getting your body and mind back in the same place at the same time before the gap between them becomes the problem.
Recovery: The Petal You Can’t Afford To Skip
I often see those who run hot for years experience a major burnout or anxiety. A body that finally says no when they won’t. Our red light sauna, steam room, contrast therapy, outdoor spa tub, and award-winning cold plunge aren’t luxuries. They’re active in nervous system regulation–the difference between a system that recovers and one that breaks down.
If you do nothing else this May, schedule one recovery session. Not because it sounds nice. Because the alternative is more expensive than you think.
Nourishment: How Depletion Sneaks Up On You
Fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, and that afternoon irritability during work are often downstream effects of how you’re not fueling yourself. Our Tacoborough café, InBody analysis, and wellness coaching exist. Depletion is the quiet saboteur most people never diagnose.
Discovery: What Stagnation Costs
A life without curiosity is a risk factor for depression. We offer workshops on menopause wellness, sound healing, and breathwork. As the Founder of Release, I wanted them to exist because stagnation takes something from you slowly enough that you don’t notice until a lot has been taken away.
How To Start
If you’re new to Release in Westborough, our Bliss Pass is the easiest entry point. Enjoy access to our recovery amenities, the contrast method, and a chance to feel what’s been missing. If you’re already a member, come more often this month. Not because you should. Because the cost of not coming is higher than the cost of coming, and you already know it.
Our Westborough trial membership is $199/month. Think of it less as an expense and more as insurance against the version of yourself you’re trying not to become.
