Mental Health Awareness Month: Why It Matters and How You Can Support Your Well-Being

Originally established in 1949 by Mental Health America, Mental Health Awareness Month was created to educate the public, reduce stigma, promote access to treatment, and celebrate recovery. Today, challenges continue to rise globally, the importance of open dialogue and proactive support has never been more critical.

Conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders affect millions of individuals and have far-reaching impacts on families, workplaces, and communities. Despite growing awareness, stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to seeking help. Many still suffer in silence, fearing judgment or misunderstanding.

Mental Health Awareness Month exists to challenge that stigma. By fostering open, compassionate conversations, we help normalize mental health struggles and create an environment where individuals feel safe to seek the support they need.

Each May, individuals and organizations come together to advocate for improved mental health care, raise public awareness, and expand access to vital resources. This month is not only about education—it’s about empathy, connection, and support.

Mental Health Is Whole-Person Health

Mental health is an essential part of overall well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and behave—and affects how we manage stress, build relationships, and make decisions throughout every stage of life. While mental health issues are not always visible, their impact is very real. A person may appear outwardly fine while facing significant internal struggles. That’s why empathy, understanding, and kindness are so crucial.

At Release Well-Being Center, we stand with all those affected by mental health conditions. As a well-being center, we are committed to creating a supportive space where individuals are seen, heard, and valued. Our community thrives on compassion—with world-class instructors, dedicated staff, and supportive members who foster a true sense of belonging.

5 Ways to Support Your Mental Health This May

Looking for simple yet impactful ways to prioritize your mental well-being? Consider these tips—many of which are available right here at Release.

1. Move Your Body Mindfully

Exercise is proven to boost endorphins and reduce anxiety. Whether it’s a walk outdoors or a structured class, movement helps regulate emotions. At Release, we offer unlimited fitness and yoga classes that create space for you to move, breathe, and reset in a supportive environment.

2. Prioritize Restorative Self-Care

Taking time to rest is just as important as staying active. Our spa services—including massages, facials, and body treatments—are designed to relieve tension, support relaxation, and nourish your nervous system.

3. Try Contrast Therapy for a Mental Reset

Looking for a deeper level of recovery? Our Contrast Therapy Suite offers infrared sauna and cold plunge treatments that reduce stress, support emotional balance, and help reset your mental state.

4. Unplug and Reconnect

Digital overload is real. Consider setting boundaries around screen time and choosing to spend time in nature, journaling, or connecting with others in real life. Our wellness workshops and events provide a space to unplug and find deeper presence.

5. Seek Help When You Need It

You are not alone. Support is available. If you’re struggling, consider visiting MentalHealth.gov, NIMH, or contacting a licensed therapist. And remember, spending time in healing spaces like Release can be a meaningful part of your mental health routine.
