Pink Ribbons and Resilience: Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a poignant reminder of an ongoing battle. A pink ribbon becomes a symbol of solidarity, hope, and a shared determination – to eradicate breast cancer and improve the lives of those affected.
Each year, our team at Release Well-Being Center extends our full support to those afflicted by this formidable illness. We aim to encourage and support the women and men in our community when they need it the most.
Stories of Hope and Resilience
As breast cancer comprises 30% of all newly diagnosed female cancer cases annually, it has left an impact on nearly everyone. Release Lifestyle Medicine Provider Brenda Walkey M.D. and Guest Services Lead Kristin Esper, who have experienced breast cancer first-hand, found rejuvenating therapies to be beneficial in their journeys.
In the autumn of 2020, Brenda received a life-changing diagnosis. It was a pivotal moment for her and her family. “My daughter was seven and I remember immediately thinking that I didn’t want her to see me upset,” she said. “As many women do, I wanted to shield all of my loved ones from the inconvenience of my diagnosis.” Brenda’s tumor was detected at an early stage, and her treatment plan encompassed a lumpectomy, radiation therapy, anti-estrogen treatment, and Zometa.
“I rode the waves of my treatment and subsequent menopause in a short period of time – during the depth of the pandemic with three kids home and a husband working in the ICU.” The steps Brenda took next, mattered most. Her battle with breast cancer compelled her to tune into her body’s signals and prioritize her own needs.
“I meditated more, did gentle movement, and adopted a plant-based diet,” she said. “I soaked in the love of friends and family – what a blessing for any woman to experience in the midst of mid-life!” As a result of her journey Brenda offers one-on-one coaching and a support group for fellow breast cancer survivors.
Krisitin was also diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age of 39. “I had two choices: curl up in a ball and feel sorry for myself, or charge on like a warrior to fight the battle,” she said. “I chose the latter.” A holistic approach to wellness helped Kristin on this challenging journey.
“My yoga practice, loved ones, and God helped me win! Taking care of the mind, body and spirit, especially through the roughest times will keep you strong… like a warrior.”
Holistic Offerings At Release: How We Can Help
Women undergoing cancer treatment can experience feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, or a sense of being unlike themselves. It is common for physical discomfort to lead to a decline in mental and emotional well-being. Several of our wellness offerings at Release can offer both physical and mental relief, making them beneficial for individuals undergoing treatments or those who have recently completed them.
Bliss Sun Sauna: Enjoy the advantages of natural light without any harmful UV rays when you enter our Sun Sauna in Bliss. If you’re struggling with low energy as a result of treatment medications, light therapy can work wonders by elevating your serotonin levels and reducing melatonin production, resulting in an increase in energy. Heightened Vitamin D levels can alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression.
Yoga: Staying active during cancer treatment can help ease fatigue, anxiety, and depression while improving quality of life and physical function. Our yoga classes are an excellent way to keep moving while improving flexibility and strength.
Oncology Massage: To help people manage their experience with cancer, we recommend oncology massage. A licensed massage therapist with expertise in this specific treatment aims to provide comfort, relaxation and support. Additional advantages include an immune system boost, improved sleep and relief from anxiety, pain, and nausea.
Personalized Health Coaching: If you’d like a more tailored approach to your well-being, or have specific concerns you’d like to discuss, we encourage you to book an appointment with one of our lifestyle medicine providers. They can take into account your medical history, current physical health, and personal goals to come up with a comprehensive wellness routine. Before embarking on a new wellness routine, we encourage you to consult with your doctor.
Laugh For a Cure
Join us at Release on October 20th as we celebrate Laugh For a Cure, a fundraising gala where our community can come together and support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We’ve lined up a fantastic evening filled with local comedians, homemade cocktails, and organic food from our very own Nourish Cafe.
Proceeds go directly towards preventing and ultimately finding a cure for breast cancer. Those unable to attend the gala in person, can make a difference by donating here. For further details, reach out at concierge@releasewellbeingcenter.com.
