Happiness is a state that we all want to achieve. Everything we do, every action we take is done with the intention to become happier. In our quest for happiness, we get an education and build a career, get married or stay single, raise kids or not, look for a job or travel the world, help others, all the while searching for bliss.
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
― Mahatma Gandhi
But true happiness—this peaceful unaltered feeling of joy that lasts despite changing situations—is really more about being than doing.
According to Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, as he explains in his book Happiness, happiness is “a deep sense of flourishing that arises from an exceptionally healthy mind.” In the Yoga Sutras, the greatest classical text from the yoga school of Indian philosophy, Patanjali states that “if you can control the rising of the mind into ripples, you will experience Yoga.” Even Abraham Lincoln, one of America’s greatest presidents, agrees when he said that “folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”
So would it be that happiness is based purely on the way we see the world, the way we interpret the events of our lives? If this is an inside job, and our mind is the doorway to a sustained joy, how do we prepare it for this great task of becoming happy? How do we prep our minds to find joy day to day?
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.
― Dr. Seuss
